Cell Phone Tower-Equipments in it,how they work,their parts in Cell Phone work?

Basically, cell phone tower locations contain equipment in what is called an RBS (Radio Base Station). This system works this way:
When you make a call on your cell phone, the signal is picked up by the antenna on the tower in one of three sectors (Alpha, Beta, Gamma). This is the direction you are from the antenna (ex.alpha – north, beta – south/southeast)
Once the antenna picks up your call, it goes thru the receiver and is placed on a microwave link toa landline line to the MSC (Mobile Switching Center). This is where your call is processed. It checks the area code and number you are calling and the number you are calling from. It then routes the call to the appropriate line that goes to the place that you called. It is just like a bus station. There are buses going to every city and you get on the bus going to the city you want to go to. The phone company has circuits going to every city and the area code decides which city your call is connected to. The calls are usually connected to different cities over fiber optics circuits. Once the call reaches it’s destination city, it is sent back to the tower location and to the cell phone you called.
How Does it know which tower you are located? You phone has an identification number located in what is called a SIM card. This is like an IP address on the internet. It identifies this customer. When you have a signal on your phone, this means that the tower equipment is in communications with your phone and each tower is in communications with the switch, thus the switch know where to send your call.
Each tower only has a communications range of a few miles. Once you are out of range of one tower, it “hands” your call off to the next tower and all your information is handed off from the prvious Radion Base Station to the Radio Base Station that your phone currently has a signal with.
The Cell Tower Location also has GPS (Global Positioning System) for the location of the tower. This is extremely important for your 911 calls. Example, without GPS, if you live in Los Angeles and your area code is 213. When you dial 911 on your cell phone you will get the 911 operator in Los Angeles. This is good. But what is you leave L.A. and travel to Atlanta and you dial 911, you don’t want to get the 911 operator in L.A., you want the 911 operator is Atlanta. The equipment at the Cell Tower Location will insure that no matter what the area code of your cell phone or what city or town your are located, if you dial 911, you will get the 911 operator of the city that you are physically located.

I hopes this gives you a basic understanding on how the Cell Phone System works. There are many other functions that take place to insure that your calls are reliably connected. You must remember, there is text messaging, video, web access, and the most important reason that a phone company exists, the billing. We have discussed none that.
Now they are installing GSM and UMTS systems. These systems are to serve mainly there purposes:

1. More bandwith. This means faster web access, video, music, etc.
2. This will allow your phone to work anywhere in the world.
This means your phone will work in Europe, Asia, Canada, or anywhere else you travel with without making any changes except the way you dial the number. And vice versa. There phones will work here in the United States.
3. Billing. Bigger bandwith, bigger phone bill. More customers, more phone bills. ETC….

This is as simple as I can explain it. I have been doing this over 20 years and I still have to study.
